by Kerry Belle 02 Mar 2024 0 Comments

Silk pillowcases have gained significant attention in the realm of skincare and beauty, with dermatologists highlighting their numerous benefits. These luxurious pillowcases, made from natural silk fibres, offer more than just a touch of elegance to your sleep routine. They are renowned for their potential to transform the health and appearance of your skin.

Does your gorgeous Silk Closet Silk Pillowcase actually help prevent wrinkles?

Dermatologists have conducted studies and shared insights on the advantages of using silk pillowcases, shedding light on how they can contribute to a more radiant and rejuvenated complexion. Let's explore some of the articles and excerpts from dermatologists that delve into the remarkable benefits of silk pillowcases.

1.  What silk does — and doesn't do — for hair

Here is an excerpt from the Washington Post:

The benefits of a silk pillowcase are most pronounced for hair, experts say, because the silk can help hair retain moisture from products and natural oils and reduce friction that could cause tangles and breakage. It’s especially beneficial for curly or natural hair, which doesn’t retain as much moisture as straight hair and is more prone to breakage, says Misty Eleryan, a micrographic surgery and dermatologic oncology fellow at the Ronald Reagan UCLA Medical Center. “It’s all a domino effect: If the silk or satin doesn’t absorb that moisture, then your hair stays moisturized and your hair isn’t as prone to breakage.”

2.  This is an excerpt from Total Beauty:

Cosmetic dermatologist Dr. Howard Sobel, MD, explains that silk products have certain cosmetic benefits: "100 percent silk does not clog pores, which is why a silk pillowcase or sheets are a great option to consider if you have oily or acne-prone skin," says Dr. Sobe. "Silk also tends to absorb less moisture than cotton, leaving your skin more hydrated through the night."

Similarly, board-certified dermatologist Dr. Tsippora Shainhouse, MD, FAAD, adds, "Silks (and some satins) have a tighter weave, that creates a smoother surface, so that hair and skin glide over it, but don't get caught or rubbed or irritated. Reducing friction (which can be much greater with some stiffer and rougher cotton or polyester sheets) can help both hair and skin."

3.  An excerpt from Health Digest:

While a great moisturizer and a good night's sleep are essential for any beauty routine, experts suggest you should add in one more treatment. According to Good Housekeeping, silk pillowcases may help prevent wrinkles. Dermatologist Dr. Neal Schultz tells Good Housekeeping, "We get 'crush wrinkles' from sleeping on our side/face, so we may get less of those when sleeping on silk." Minimizing morning creases can help prevent permanent wrinkles (via Wirecutter).

Switching to a smooth, silk pillowcase is also less abrasive on the skin. Dermatologist and medical director of MDacne, Dr. Yoram Harth, tells Healthline that silk is a non-absorbing material, so it rejects the dirt, bacteria, and natural oils that usually settle into your cotton pillowcase. Dr. Harth goes on to say that a person living with acne may benefit from adding a silk pillowcase into their routine because they "are gentler on the skin of people with acne or sensitive skin than rough cotton pillowcases." Manhattan cosmetic dermatologist Dr. Dendy Engelman tells Wirecutter, "The bottom line is, any product that helps reduce the strain on the skin is beneficial." 4.  A clinical study conducted on patients with atophic dermatitis concluded that silk has a positive effect on inflamed skin:

The use of pure silk as a clothing-based therapy generated an appearance of good skin, increased the level of comfort, and improved the quality of life of patients significantly during the management of AD symptoms. ...This clothing can be used as an advisable non-pharmacological therapy for controlling the severity of AD.

Hung MH, Sartika D, Chang SJ, Chen SJ, Wang CC, Hung YJ, Cherng JH, Chiu YK. Influence of silk clothing therapy in patients with atopic dermatitis. Dermatol Reports. 2019 Dec 22;11(2):8176. doi: 10.4081/dr.2019.8176. PMID: 32269744; PMCID: PMC7137929.

The benefits of sleeping on a silk pillowcase in terms of anti-aging do seem very promising but even if the scientific evidence is somewhat minimal at the moment, there is nothing more luxurious than sleeping on a smooth and sumptuous silk pillowcase.  What bliss!
